Tying the knot in a foreign country means you get a wedding and honeymoon in one - it gives your guests a good excuse for a holiday too. Approximately 16% of first marriages take place in a far-flung destination, and another 44 percent of second-time bride and grooms do the same. A wedding ceremony is a chance for close family and friends to get together, and holding the celebration away from home can make it that bit more special. Nevertheless, you wouldn't go on holiday without insurance, so a wedding abroad should be no different.

What protection can wedding insurance offer?
If your wedding has to be rearranged or cancelled, wedding insurance will cover any irrecoverable expenses. Perhaps a key member of the wedding party falls ill or has an accident; quality wedding insurance means you can put the health of your loved ones first, without having to worry about the financial implications of cancelling your wedding.

The complications of travel
You don't want to loose your wedding rings on the big day, but loosing your passport could be even more complicated if you're marrying abroad. Whilst it's your job to keep your passport safe, wedding insurance will cover reasonable costs for travel, accommodation or fees incurred as a result of loosing essential wedding documents. Just make sure you report the loss or theft of passport or tickets to your embassy within 24 hours, or as soon as reasonably possible and get a written record of the event for your policy to be valid.

Valuable luggage
Travelling long distances, means there is an increased risk of loosing or damaging your wedding attire, cake or flowers. Pack your wedding attire and all other essentials for your wedding carefully; investing in high quality luggage and packaging means you will feel more at ease when your luggage disappears down the conveyor belt. Arranging wedding insurance means you'll also be financially protected if your ceremonial attire is lost or damaged in those crucial three months leading up to and even 48 hours after the big day.

Planning any wedding, at home or abroad, can require a big financial commitment. When you choose to marry abroad, you want to be able to enjoy the build-up and the big day itself without worrying about the financial implications should anything go wrong. So in the midst of arranging flowers, food and favours don't forget to say I do to wedding insurance!
